This badge has expired. Expedia has not sponsored a carbon reduction in the current year.

Carbon dioxide emissions, the principal cause of global warming, are an inevitable consequence of energy use. Every time an individual or organization uses electricity for lighting, fuel for transport, etc., additional carbon emissions are released into the atmosphere.

Expedia has partnered with TerraPass to sponsor clean energy and carbon reduction projects that result in a verified, measurable reduction in carbon emissions.

Expedia's internal sustainability initiatives

  • Recycling -- receptacles for paper and aluminum cans in all offices and public areas throughout our office locations
  • Carpooling/provide transportation - Expedia offers all its full time employees an annual bus pass at no cost while employed by Expedia. Expedia employees are also eligible to participate in the Expedia Commuter Voucher Program, an incentive program that offers $10 gift voucher sent monthly to employees who carpool, walk, bike, bus or vanpool to work.
  • Employee Community Engagement -- Expedia is committed to building a sustainable workforce and culture by supporting the causes that inspire our employees, and creating opportunities for our employees to engage in our corporate sustainability initiatives.
  • In the fall of 2008, we will relocate our corporate offices housing 30% of our employees to a LEED certified property in Bellevue, Washington. This building is the first property built by the Hines-Calpers Green Development Fund, and the first building on the West Coast to receive LEED Core and Shell pre-certification.
  • In 2008, we will be embarking on a complete carbon audit and calculation process for our global operations to determine our carbon footprint and establish a baseline measurement that we can work to improve. This assessment will include office energy, servers, vehicles, air travel, and employee commute.

Expedia's industry sustainability initiatives

  • World Heritage Alliance for Sustainable Tourism -- The cornerstone of Expedia's Corporate Social Responsibility Programs, WHA was formed in partnership by Expedia, Inc. and the United Nations Foundation, and now includes more than 50 travel industry partners committed to promoting sustainable tourism and the preservation and enhancement of historic, cultural and natural treasures and landmarks.
  • Industry Advocacy -- Expedia is dedicated to educating our customers, employees and suppliers about the practices and benefits of environmentally and socially conscious travel; endorsing sustainability standards across our industry; and providing destination advocacy and support in times of weather-related, environmental or economic distress.
  • Community Investments -- Expedia takes a local approach to investing in causes that help build sustainable, healthy, vibrant communities where our employees live and work.
  • Expedia actively engages our vast global partner network in our sustainable tourism mission, and convene the industry around key social and environmental issues. We leverage partner and supplier forums as an opportunity to drive awareness of key sustainability issues. The central topic of our Dec 2007 Partner Event, attended by over 900 industry partners, was sustainability and includes a panel of industry experts facilitated by Peter Greenberg.
